Poetry Portfolio Project
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Create a Poetry Portfolio using an approved theme of your choice.
2. Collect 8-10 poems that have a relationship to your selected and approved theme.
You should include only ONE (1) poem per page. If you find a poem in a book, you must retype it. If you find a poem on the internet, you must copy/paste it into a word processing document. One of the poems you include in your portfolio should be from a well-known author. No more than THREE (3) poems from any given poet. You may include ONE (1) song in this project. However, that song must include at least two of the poetic devices we study in class. The lyrics must also be school appropriate.
3. For each poem write three to five (3-5) complete sentences. This writing can be included on the same page as the poem.
In these sentences, you should explain how the poem connects to your theme, why you chose this particular poem, and how this poem demonstrates poetic structures, we have discussed in class.
4. Correctly cite your poems.
The citations may be added at the bottom of the page on which you have each poem, or you may create a works cited page at the end of your portfolio where you list the citations for all of your poems. Poems without citations will not be graded. Citations are included in the grade; take your time writing them.
5. Create a Table of Contents with page numbers and page titles.
6. Create a neat and attractive cover that includes images and a title related to your theme. You should also include your name and hour somewhere on the cover.
7. Complete the following handouts:
· Poetry Basics
· Figurative Language
· Rhythm and Rhyme/Diction
Extra Credit:
8. Include 1-2 poems of your own using at least two (2) of the structures of poetry we have discussed in class. If you would like to complete this section and would like a specific poetic structure to follow, see Ms. F. (+1 point per poem)
9. Include a 1-2 page introduction to your project in which you do some or all of the following:
Explain why you chose your theme; what the theme or subject means to you; what you’ve discovered about the theme or subject from doing this project; that you learned or discovered about poetry and poetic structure; what was challenging about this project. (+2 points)
10. Draw or paint an original illustration to accompany at least one of your chosen poems. The illustrations should also reflect your theme. (+1 point per image)
